Dave Ballou


Trumpeter/Composer Dave Ballou has released nine internationally recognized CD’s as a leader or co-leader. He has performed or recorded with ensembles led by Rabih Abou-Kahlil, Steely Dan, Michael Formanek, Woody Herman, Andrew Hill, John Hollenbeck’s Large Ensemble, Sheila Jordan, Oliver Lake, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman, Maria Schneider and an extensive list of music artists. Ballou has performed Bach’s Brandenberg Concerto #2 with the Bella Musica Orchestra of New York, Larry Austin’s Improvisations with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Gunther Schuller’s Journey into Jazz with the Spokane Symphony and Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He also was a featured soloist for the world premiere of Schuller’s Encounters and an orchestra member for the Tony Award winning Broadway revival of 42nd St. (2001-2004).His compositions have been performed and recorded by the Meridian Arts Ensemble, Trumpeter Jon Nelson, French hornist Adam Unsworth and the TILT Brass EnsembHe earned a Bachelor of Music (magna cum laude) from Berklee College of Music in 1986 and a Master of Arts from the University of New Hampshire in 1992. His principal teachers were Julio Tancredi, Herb Pomeroy, Greg Hopkins, Laurie Frink, Clark Terry, Hal Crook, George Garzone, Joe Maneri, Keith Polk and Paul Caputo. Dave is an Associate Professor of Music at Towson University and the leader of the Jazz and Commercial music division. He is director of the Bill and Helen Murray Jazz Residency and the Improvisation ensemble. Dave is a member of the International Society for Improvised Music, serves as chair of the jazz recommendations committee for the International Trumpet Guild and is a board member of the Baltimore Chamber Jazz Society.
